Milea: Suara Dari Dilan is the story of a young woman with an extraordinary talent for music, Nadir, who lives in the city of Suara Dari Dilan in Iran. A talented but modest girl, Nadir loves music but she feels lonely, despite being surrounded by musical friends. One day her father falls ill and she becomes the sole guardian of her family. In spite of everything Nadir sets out to create a new star for herself and enter the famous Suara Dari Dilan in a music competition.
The only obstacle for Milea, is that her only musical friend, a girl named Ashtiani, is also her best rival in the competition. At the beginning of the movie we are introduced to a group of friends who play a major role in the story. Roknaba, a kind but goodhearted Persian girl, works as a fortune teller, while Rasoula, a very smart and confident Iranian girl, is a doctor. Fani, a happy and jovial Basiji boy, works as a broker, while Saleh, a mysterious yet funny Basiji girl and another mysterious and funny Basiji boy - Javan, try to find the missing plot in the town's history, while it remains a mystery how the townspeople react to the members of Milea's group.
We slowly come to know more about Milea and her group of friends as they attempt to put together their music, plot and start their careers. It will be their talent for music that will catapult them to fame. However, problems will crop up on the way. Like how the town's people are suspicious of their antics, it will cause trouble for them, too. It is at this point in the movie that the viewer realizes that Milea: Suara Dari Dilan is definitely a movie for young boys and girls.
If you are a parent looking fora movie with a difference, then this movie is definitely for you. It is definitely no typical girl-oriented melodrama but one more dedicated to showing the main characters in a different light. In this way, I think the movie succeeds.
The music in the movie is superb, especially considering the fact that the film was made for a younger audience. There are many songs that will remind you of the music from the old styles of Western music, but still with modern beats. It's a mixture of different genres of music, and the music sounds really great. You can watch the movie without any knowledge of Western music, but I have to say that for those who have a taste for modern music, I would not advise you to skip the movie.
There are a lot of interesting roles for women in the movie, so I'm going to name a few of them, since it's always interesting to see women have complex roles in movies. But it does not stop there. The movie focuses on three main female characters: Ashtiani, Rasoula and Saleh. They all show their own characteristics and their own faults but still manage to come out as successful women.
Ashtiani, the third female character, is an expert musician, but she is taken for granted by most of the male artists. She tries to hide her talent, but it's an art she cannot live without. She struggles to prove that she is strong and independent, and not just a pretty face.
Rasoula is the most mature and outgoing girl in the group. She comes from a very rich family, and she has a heart of gold. She tries to help out all her female friends, who also have beautiful voices, and also gets into trouble when she meddles with the wrong people. After watching the movie, you'll understand why some critics said that the movie should have been called "Milea: Suara Dari Dilan: The Musical". In the end, you'll probably get more confused than when you started.
